Nadzab Airport raid thug gets five years
A PRIME suspect of the Nadzab Airport robbery near Lae, Morobe Province, has been jailed for five years for possession of firearms and ammunition.
Chris Orere of Yorota village, Northern Province, was sentenced when he appeared in the Lae district court with fellow suspect Yuana Powi from Garaina, Morobe Province.
Powi had pleaded not guilty to possessing firearms and ammunition.
Morobe Police Commander Superintendent Kaiglo Ambane said Orere will be charged with armed robbery at Nadzab and an earlier one at Bulolo.
The airport robbery occurred in the early hours of the morning when passengers and airport and airline workers were robbed as the thieves tried to force open airport safes.
Police have arrested 13 suspects, including Orere and Powi, at West Taraka suburb two weeks ago.
According to police reports, four of the suspects are escapees from Buimo jail.
The court had found Orere guilty of possessing an unlicensed shotgun.
Supt Ambane said while Powi pleaded not guilty to his charge he however, admitted taking part in the Nadzab robbery.
"So far two people have admitted their involvement in the robbery" he said.
Ben Kamre, from New Ireland Province, had his sentence reduced to four months with hard labour for possession of firearms.
He will answer to the ammunition charge in 2015.
Supt Ambane said an identification parade will be arranged next week for witnesses to identify the remaining suspects so they can be charged.
"I would like to acknowledge the investigation team who have done a good job so far," Supt Ambane said. PNG Today/Post Courier
