Somare leaves NA Party
East Sepik Governor, Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare has resigned as Parliamentary Member of the National Alliance Party.
Sir Michael, in a letter dated Tuesday 6th October 2015, and addressed to the National Alliance Party Leader and Treasurer Patrick Pruaitch said he wanted out of the Political Party he formed, because he is not happy with the way the country's economy is being managed and run.
Sir Michael says he has decided to resign from the Party, because he has seen that the economy has not been managed with discipline and austerity with respect to global governance measures and standards, despite a series of public assurances of fiscal overhaul by the current regime. The founding Prime Minister also announced that this move also stems from his decision two weeks ago to refer the Prime Minister to the Ombudsman Commission, for alleged breaches under the Leadership Code. He says he cannot remain in the Party, claiming this will only create a political backlash from the government and other coalition partners. Somare explains that this bold stand is a strategic move to preserve the public identity and internal integrity of this political party, against what he termed as the habitual illegal and negligent actions of Peter O'Neill as the Prime Minister.
