PNG Prime Minister Peter O'Neill recognised for Economic Management and Advancing Higher Education
Papua New Guinea Prime Ministe Peter O’Neill received an award in honor and recognition of the work he was doing in managing the Papua New Guinea economy, and towards the advancement of higher education in the nation.
PM O’Neill was made a Fellow of Institute of Certified Management Accountants of Australia, a well-recognized institute which is associated with the Jubilee University of Papua New Guinea.
Emeritus Professor Janek Ratnatunga and Dr Thaddeus Kambanei of Jubillee University conferred the award to the Prime Minister in a convocation ceremony in Port Moresby this morning.
Dr Kambanei said the Prime Minister was nominated for his stewardship of the economy, which has grown to over K50 billion in size, and his involvement in advancing higher education to create opportunities for more college-aged Papua New Guineans.
He pointed out the recognition of the Jubilee University, and the setting up of the Western Pacific University, as examples of PM O’Neill’s leadership in higher education.
The Prime Minister said he was grateful for the award.
“It’s a recognition for what we are trying to do in the country to ensure our children get a chance at a decent education.
“Our tuition fee free policy has ensured there is one million more children in schools today.
“We will continue to improve facilities in schools at all levels, especially at tertiary level so more of our college-aged young Papua New Guineans get an opportunity and not miss out do to lack of space.”
“I want to commend the Jubillee University for its role in giving an opportunity to our kids who do not make it through the education system. The government will continue to support the partnership between the church and university there.”
On the economy, the Prime Minister said it was not easy balancing priorities in a challenging environment, with the global economy in slowdown.
“Our economy has doubled in size and continues to grow. Despite the current global climate, the fundamentals of our economy (inflation, foreign reserves, etc) remain strong and stable, which gives businesses and foreign investors’ confidence.”
In October last year, the Prime Minister received an Honorary Doctorate from the Soka University in Japan.
