Port Moresby Police to adopt new Model in 2016

Police in Port Moresby are rethinking options to provide better services to the public and are adamant on making changes to the current model of policing they are using in the Nation’s Capital Port Moresby.
According to NCD Met Supt. Ben Turi changes will be make this year as per the Police Commissioner’s Conferences in Bougainville at the end of last year they are intending to divide NCD into three policing districts that is Waigani, Gordons and Badili to make it more convenient and efficient to serve the public.
The districts will be headed by Superintendents who will be appointed when the structure changes.
The decentralization of the old model is aimed to serve the people better than the old model
“Our intent is to make NCD into three districts will start off in this year (2016). By July we hope the National Planning Department will accept our structure and take it into effect so that we can not live with the old model structure,” he said.
Turi said minor offenses will be dealt at these stations and other serious criminal, warrants, Indictment offenses, and traffic offenses and matters will be referred to Boroko Police Station.
Furthermore, the city is changing and the population is increasing and policing model needs to change.
He said under the old structure everything is referred to and done in Boroko Police Station and all the case are cramped up there and justice is not served.
“The police station commanders and officers will pass the buck to Boroko so you will not get the result for it.”
He said if an offense is dealt with in the station it can be referred to a nearest main district police station cutting back on minor offenses and matters at Boroko Police Station.
He added that as a requirement of taking on board the new model, cells need to be upgraded which is one of the things they will consider.
