Malekula MP Esmon Saimon elected Vanuatu's speaker of Parliament
Vanuatu's new parliament has elected Malekula MP Esmon Saimon as the speaker of parliament.
The election was the first matter of business after the MPs chosen in last month's snap election were sworn in this morning.
A former member of the Melanesian Progressive Party (MPP) Saimon contested the snap election of 22 January under the Vanua'aku Pati (VP). He was nominated for the position of the Speaker by Pentecost MP and President of the Reunification Movement for Change (RMC) Charlot Salwai.
Salwai himself is being opted for the position of Prime Minister.
Saimon won the vote 33-18 over the only other candidate, the Torres MP Christophe Emelee, who was nominated by the core of the Sato Kilman-led caretaker government.
