PNG Police firearm, uniforms found on impersonator

NCD detectives have recovered a high powered police issued firearm, live bullets and a pair of police field uniforms from a Bougainvillean man.

The suspect was armed with the weapon and impersonating police when he was arrested inside a company premise owned by some Asians.

Acting Assistant Commissioner of Crimes Victor Isouve said the suspect, 37 year old, Scott Dylan of Tarara village Kieta, was providing security for some Asians when he was arrested inside the company premise near the 6 mile dump.

Detectives attached to the Crimes Directorate at Police Headquarters were tipped off by informants who became suspicious when they saw the armed Bougainvillean man escorting the Asians with the high powered rifle.

The police issue HK MP5 Semi-Automatic Assault Rifle (Serial Number B75457) fully loaded with 17 rounds of 9mm calibre bullets was confiscated and Dylan was taken into custody.

Further investigations revealed that Dylan a former PNG Defence Force Soldier was given the firearm and coerced into wearing the police uniform by a police officer.

A senior police officer is now suspected of illegally issuing the firearm, bullets and uniforms to a civilian for the purpose of providing security for Asians.

Isouve said detectives investigating this case will arrest and charge the officer concerned.

“Commissioner Gari Baki has declared 2016 the year of discipline and it is by taking such actions that we will deter other members of the Constabulary from partaking in corrupt activities,” Isouve said.
