Wanigela Villager allegedly shot by Police
A 28 year old Wanigela Villager Boala Beru who was shot by a stray bullet yesterday at Koki allegedly by police will undergo an operation this afternoon to remove a bullet lodged in his right shoulder according to his aunt Elvin Auma.
She said her nephew was at the unauthorised betel nut market when police arrived in police marked vehicles and attacked the vendors when he was shot by a stray bullet while heading for cover under the houses built on stilts.
It is understood that the police retaliated over their first attempt to disperse the vendors turned sour yesterday (29/02/16) when disgruntled vendors unpredictably attacked and chased the police. The police allegedly left and returned with reinforcement the when the incident occurred between 10 and 11 am.
The incident looked like a scene from an action movie when police attacked from all possible route of escape forcing the vendors and the public caught in the commotion to run towards the sea and take refuge under the stilt houses.
According to villagers another youth from Gulf Province is also nursing head injuries at the hospital from a gas canister fired during the incident.
Both men were rushed to the hospital yesterday. Boala is expected to have an operation this afternoon to remove the bullet lodged in his right shoulder.
