Hijacked PNG bank notes making their way back into the country : Bakani
The Papua New Guinea Central Bank has confirmed that demonetized paper notes in millions of Kina was hijacked in 2013, when it was on its way to Europe to be recycled. NBC reports.
Central Bank Governor Loi Bakani said they sold the demonetized paper monies to a company in Europe who wanted to recycled it into something else.
But, he said a container carrying those notes were hijacked along the way between PNG and Europe.
"Now we have evidence of those stock of money trying to find their way back to PNG," Bakani said.
Bakani said Bank of PNG has received some already, but the bank is not exchanging them because they were demonetized paper money, as they are not legal tender anymore.
