PNG Politics: Duma joins Opposition, 62 MPs in Camp
The Papua New Guinea Opposition has been boosted in numbers when United Resources Party Leader William Duma broke ranks with the O'Neill Government today and joined them.
He broke away from Prime Minister’s camp with Higher Education Minister Pila Niningi and Police Minister Jelta Wong.
Earlier on, Commerce Minister Wera Mori announced his resignation and joining the Laguna camp increasing the number to 50.
The alternative government claims they now have 62 MPs in camp.
They have now passed the required number of 56 to successfully elect a Prime Minister.
Following their last unsuccessful attempt to file a motion of no confidence as a result of Parliament being adjourned to May 28, and they were defeated on the floor on motions to stop adjournment and appoint new members of the Private Business Committee.
James Marape says the camp still welcome like minded leaders from the other side.
There is 111 seats in parliament and 62 basically means Peter O’Neill is leading a minority government, it was a huge political power shift today.
