“Australia remains as our closest partner in bilateral exchanges and dialogues and reciprocal help between nations to nations and has maintained its placing in regards to foreign relations thus far,” said Mr Marape.

“With me I’m bringing a few relevant government ministers to exchange ministers to ministers dialogue to set the pace for the way PNG and Australia must relate going into the 2020s."

"I’m also taking a few governors with me on a sub-regional levels where we will see the context of how state and federal government relates in Australia."

Mr Marape said this is based on his idea that provinces become micro economists and generating their own revenues instead of just waiting for Waigani for major handouts.

In response to NBC’s question on the issue of the asylum seekers’ detention center closure in Manus, Prime Minister Marape said this will also be discussed in this visit.

“I’ve put to the Honorable Peter Dutton who was in the country early this week that we’re looking at the closure of the Manus asylum seeker arrangements and exactly what form and shape the closure will take place and exactly when it will eventuate is something that both sides of the Torres Strait must agree to.

He said the outcome of their discussions will be announced on his arrival back into the country adding it will set the pace as to how PNG and Australia relate to each other going forward.

PM Marape said Deputy Prime Minister Davis Steven will be the acting Prime Minister during this period of his absence.
