PNG Justice Minister Kramer Praised for Tabling Record Number of Bills in Parliament

Papua New Guinea Justice Minister Bryan Kramer has been commended for bringing a record number of Bills to parliament during his short term.

East Sepik Governor Allan Bird and other fellow MPs made this comment during the debate in Parliament yesterday.

Krammer presented five Bills on Thursday and one on Wednesday that was passed.

One among them is the Family Protection Amendment Bill 2022.

Governor Bird when commenting on the Bill says, although not a lawyer by profession Krammer has done well than previous Justice Ministers.

Bird commended the government for the Bill and says, this shows the commitment to address violence against women and girls.

Kiriwina Goodenough MP, Douglas Tomuriesa reminded the house that violence against men is also a concern, and emphasised the need for the government to focus on the family units.

Northern Governor Garry Juffa also shared the same sentiments among other issues but wants the laws to be tough on those encouraging domestic violence as well as having the Family and Sexual Violence Unit become a Police Division.

The  Family Protection Amended Bill addressed a number of key areas.

It ranges from increased penalties to immediate issuance of Interim Protection Orders by recognised community government officials, a new offence as well as penalties for obstructing service providers dealing with counselling.
