Papua New Guinea and China Strengthen Bilateral Ties Through Signed Agreements

 Papua New Guinea's Foreign Affairs Minister, Justin Tkatchenko, has welcomed Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his delegation to Port Moresby today for an official visit. The visit comes at the invitation of Prime Minister Hon. James Marape and Minister Tkatchenko, aimed at bolstering bilateral relations between the two nations.

During a bilateral meeting held this afternoon, both parties engaged in discussions covering various mutual interests. Several agreements were reached, signifying a step forward in enhancing cooperation between Papua New Guinea and China.


A memorandum of understanding (MOU) on Cooperation in the Field of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) was signed, marking a significant stride towards advancing Papua New Guinea's ICT sector.

Furthermore, the signing of protocols on Phytosanitary Requirements for the Export of Unroasted Coffee and Cocoa Beans from Papua New Guinea to China opens up market access for local coffee and cocoa farmers. This move is expected to stimulate economic growth by creating employment opportunities and increasing income for the people of Papua New Guinea.

In a gesture of gratitude, Minister Tkatchenko expressed appreciation to the Chinese Government for its contribution of USD 270,000 (K1.02 million) towards funding the Joint Feasibility Study for a Free Trade Agreement. Additionally, a donation of US$1 million (K3.8 million) for disaster relief was acknowledged, demonstrating China's commitment to supporting Papua New Guinea during times of need.

Minister Tkatchenko reaffirmed Papua New Guinea's unwavering support for the "One China" policy, a cornerstone of the bilateral relations established since 1976. He emphasized the importance of China's continued support in implementing projects aimed at fulfilling Papua New Guinea's development goals.

Acknowledging China's presence in the Pacific region, Minister Tkatchenko highlighted its role in promoting development cooperation and addressing common challenges faced by Pacific Island Countries and China as developing nations.

Minister Tkatchenko reiterated the significance of the bilateral relations between Papua New Guinea and China, emphasizing the importance of trust in building a strong friendship. He underscored Papua New Guinea's recognition of China as a vital bilateral partner and expressed commitment to further strengthening ties between the two nations.
