Government and Stakeholders Unite to Elevate PNG Tourism

The Papua New Guinea National Tourism Conference is set to provide a platform for stakeholders and industry players to discuss strategies for enhancing tourism in the country. The event aims to shape the sector’s future by focusing on key areas of development and growth.

Scheduled to take place from April 8 to 10, the conference will be held under the theme, "Indigenize our arts and culture, modernize our infrastructure, and promote peace and unity in diversity." Tourism, Arts & Culture Minister Beldan Namah highlighted the significance of the initiative, particularly as PNG approaches its 50th anniversary of independence.

Namah stated that the timing of the conference is ideal, allowing the sector to reflect on its journey since 1975 while planning for the next 50 years. He emphasized the need for fresh and bold strategies to position tourism as a leading economic driver alongside other major industries in the country.

The minister described the conference as a milestone event, urging participants to use past experiences to inspire and drive the industry toward new heights. He stressed that as PNG prepares to celebrate 50 years of independence, the tourism sector is uniquely placed to showcase the country’s diverse arts, culture, and heritage to the world.

The Tourism Promotion Authority (TPA) will organize the event in partnership with the Mineral Resource Development Company (MRDC), which has committed K250,000 in sponsorship. MRDC Managing Director Augustine Mano pointed out that tourism remains an underutilized sector and has not received adequate attention from stakeholders. He highlighted its potential to transform the economy if structured and supported effectively.

Mano further explained that MRDC, through its investments in hospitality, aviation, and energy, aims to promote tourism as a key economic sector. He reaffirmed MRDC’s commitment to a long-term partnership with TPA to strengthen the industry’s role in national development. Minister Namah welcomed the support, emphasizing the government’s dedication to unlocking PNG’s tourism potential.
