Bank of PNG Thwarts Cyber Attack: Financial Systems Remain Untouched Amid Rising Digital Threats

The Bank of Papua New Guinea (BPNG) has successfully contained a recent cyber incident, ensuring no impact on financial data or banking operations. BPNG Governor Elizabeth Genia confirmed that the bank’s cybersecurity team detected unusual network activity on February 21 within an isolated testing environment, separate from its critical infrastructure.

“The issue was fully resolved by February 23, with no disruptions to banking services or compromise of stakeholder information,” Genia stated. She emphasized that this incident was unrelated to another recent cybersecurity event reported elsewhere in Papua New Guinea.

“The two incidents were entirely distinct, involving different methods and targeting separate systems,” she explained. “At all times, BPNG’s banking operations, financial systems, and stakeholder data remained secure.”

Genia highlighted BPNG’s unwavering commitment to strengthening its cybersecurity framework. The central bank is enhancing its defenses through improved monitoring systems and international collaboration to counter emerging threats.

“All essential banking services continue to operate normally and are protected by globally recognized security measures,” she added. “BPNG remains dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of security to safeguard the stability of Papua New Guinea’s financial system.”

The central bank reassured the public that proactive measures are being taken to address vulnerabilities and maintain trust in the country’s banking sector, even as digital threats grow more sophisticated.
