Death of Police Officer Results in Blocking off PNG's Highlands Highway

The death of First Constable Harry Gorano has led to the blockade of the Mando to Five Mile section of the Highlands Highway in Goroka. Constable Gorano, who was attached to MS 11 Wabag in Enga Province, was one of four officers attacked on the Mendi-Tambul Road. He succumbed to his injuries two weeks ago at Port Moresby General Hospital.

His family, originally from Kafuku village, 5 Mile of Gahuku LLG in Goroka District, and Mando in Daulo District, is demanding the arrest of those responsible within seven days. They are also seeking an explanation for the delayed medivac, which they believe contributed to his death.

Goroka Police Station Commander, Chief Inspector Timothy Pomoso, has granted temporary approval for the roadblock until the family’s petition is presented to Governor Simon Sia. However, he warned that any further blockades beyond this would be deemed illegal, and arrests would follow.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Peter Guinness has called on the family to remove the roadblocks and allow authorities to handle the case. He also warned opportunists exploiting the situation that they will face consequences. Additionally, he clarified that a bus burned during the unrest was set ablaze by opportunists, not the officer’s relatives.

Governor Simon Sia and ACP Guinness are scheduled to meet with the family to formally receive their petition and discuss a way forward to address their grievances.
