CONTRASTING LEADERSHIP STYLES BETWEEN PETER O'NEILL AND BARRACK OBAMA

When President Barack Obama was voted for the 2nd Time for Presidency seat, mix reactions have rocked United States of America. Stock Exchange has heavily reacted to his victory and with many Republicans claiming they should have done better. Barack came out clearly that after his win that his victory was not by chance but by peoples’ true choice. The US elections do not matter much to a small island nation like PNG but as a growing democratic nation we can learn from how elections are conducted with fairness rather than intimidation, vote buying and other forms of corruptible means to get into power.

United States is a powerful democratic country so as PNG. Democratic government is a system of government in which a country’s political leaders are chosen by the people in regular, free, and fair elections. In a democratic system of government, people have a choice between different candidates and parties who want the power to govern. The people can criticize and replace their elected leaders and representatives if they do not perform well. The people are sovereign—they are the highest authority—and government is based on the will of the people. Elected representatives at the national and local levels must listen to the people and be responsive to their needs. Democratic system of government is the only form of government that people around the world view as legitimate.

When Americans voted they do not vote on clan and tribal lines and they do not believe in accepting bribery, luring them to vote for either the Democrat or Republic. One reason is to do with their knowledge on many social and economic issues and it is also has to do with their interests groups and principles they stand for.

I am little bit reserved when comparing PNG with the World’s number one superpower. Of course my comparison is little bit naïve. However, I am absolutely struck by the contrasting views on the voting power and selection of leaders that we vote for. We need a Prime Minister who is very eloquent, knowledgeable and grassroots-focused an d meet the expectations of the development partners and international community.

We need a charismatic leader, a leader that thinks beyond border lines and intuitively recreate something out of nothing. For President Barrack Obama, he fits well in this category of outstanding world leaders. Prime Minister, Hon. Peter O’Neill can be truly a champion in PNG if he continues to stand firm, make very bold decisions that is utilitarian in nature. He should accommodate views of the Opposition as well and think beyond party and loyalty lines and that is what universal leaders like Nelson Mandela aspires to see in leaders.

Every day, I keep my record of the daily tasks of the PNG government and what I write seem to be repetitive and these repetitive tasks occur all the time because the government has not zeroed completely and they include:
• Reduction of high crime rate
• Jailing those implicated by SWEEP Team
• Quality education and quality health services in the villages
• Establishing Quality check and balance systems on the public servants
