Members of the Southern Highlands Provincial Assembly earlier this month agreed to extend the liquor ban in the province.
One million kina was allocated in the 2014 provincial budget to implement this ban.
Members of the assembly agreed that alcohol was causing a lot of problems in communities and should be completely banned in the province.
The province already has a liquor ban policy in place, and members agreed to further strengthen this policy by extending the ban.
Governor of Southern Highlands Province, William Powi, said liquor had the potential to destroy the province and he welcomed the members call to extend the ban.
He however called on leaders to take responsibility to fully implement this policy. He said the 2014 budget has catered for this with K1 million allocated.
Members of parliament from the province also supported the call. Member for Kagua Erave, James Lagea, raised concerns of police personnel’s involvement in the illegal transportation and trade of liquor in the province.
A liquor committee has been established to come up with plans on how best they can implement the policy.
