PRIME MINISTER O'NEILL MEETS WITH GENERAL ELECTRIC PRESIDENT
Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill today met with the President and Chief Executive Officer of the General Electric Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea, Steve Sargent, at his Parliament office.
General Electric is an electric company which specializes in the fields of power, water, healthcare, oil & gas, energy management, lighting appliances and transportation, among others. In PNG, GE has extensive expertise in bringing healthcare technology – from the basic to complex in remote parts of the world and is now supporting the PNG LNG Project.
Upon welcoming Mr Sargent and his delegation to PNG, Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill said his government’s GE’s contribution to the PNG economy.
He said that the government recognizes GE's association with the country dating back 60 years, and most recently its support towards the PNG LNG project.
“GE has been in PNG since 1952 and has contributed significantly in supporting rural healthcare, water treatment, power distribution and capital providing access to wide variety of financing options in PNG,” Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill said.
He also announced that GE will soon establish an office in Port Moresby to work more closely with the government, partners and customers particularly through our oil & gas, power & water and healthcare businesses.
Mr Sargent in response to Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill said, GE is specifically keen on working with the government and international institutions such as the World Bank and Asian Development Bank on how to increase access to electricity to 70% of the population by 2030.
“GE is operational in more than 160 countries around the globe and we work best there where we have a strong understanding of the priorities and where we can offer multiple solutions with our technology, expertise and experience,” he said
