PNG Government rolls out District Housing Program
THE National Government rolled out its ambitious housing program yesterday, announcing K1 million for the first 41 districts in the country.
To compliment this initiative, MPs and governors will also contribute K500,000 each from their District Services Improvement Program (DSIP) and Provincial Service Improvement Program (PSIP) funds.
This K41 million from the national Government and the K1 million from the MPs and governors will go towards building institutional housing in the districts.
Prime Minister Peter O’Neill announced this yesterday, saying budget allocations for the next lot of 48 districts will also be addressed before the end of the year.
Mr O’Neill said this at a small but significant ceremony where he handed over the certificate of agreement signed by the Department of Lands and Physical Planning and National Planning for the handover of a portion of land at Four Mile to the ministerial committee on affordable land and housing program.
"Today the National Planning Department will roll out to the first 41 districts in the country, K1 million each out of the institutional housing for the districts," Mr O’Neill said.
"Many of the public servants who are posted out there are not able to perform their duties because of lack of accommodation.
"So with the national Government’s contribution of K1 million, all local Members through the DSIP and the governors through the PSIP are putting another K1 million, (K500,000 each).
"That should at least give us 10 houses per district per year.
"So if we consistently do that over the term of this parliament, I think over the next three years we can, including this year, we can have 40 houses in each individual district."
