PNG Government to probe comments by lawyers
Lawyer Greg Sheppard to be investigated. |
The Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, Amb Isaac Lupari, said today a thorough investigation will be carried out into well-publicized comments by two prominent lawyers in recent days.
The probe will be carried out by a team comprising senior officials drawn from the Department of Immigrations, Police, Central Bank, Justice and Department of Prime Minister and NEC.
“Over the past 48 hours we have seen a number of serious claims aired on television that relate to statements by lawyers Greg Sheppard and Harvey Maladina,” Ambassador Lupari said.
“The video has since gone viral on social media leading to rumours and innuendo.
“It is important that Young and Williams release the names of public figures they represent and transfer funds on behalf of out of the country.
“Our office has never used this law firm, particularly in relation to the transfer of funds, so I would like to see them clear the air.
“Further to this, Jimmy Maladina or anyone else in his family, have no ongoing working relationship with the Prime Minister’s Office or the Prime Minister.
“We do know that Young and Williams, have over many years, represented many other leaders both in Government and Opposition.
“It is important that they clearly explain their comments in a most direct and precise way by naming the names of people they have represented.
“This matter has to be looked at by investigative agencies in both Papua New Guinea and Australia.
“The claims are serious and considering the public standing of these two men, this investigation will be undertaken promptly.
“The claims made in the video are also undermining the credibility of the legal fraternity.
“It is important that the Papua New Guinea Law Society also properly investigate the matter and take any action required.
“The Solicitor General will now review all ongoing Government engagements with that firm with a view of transferring these files to other legal firms capable of undertaking this work.”
