Indonesia has offered 12 scholarships to Papua New Guinea and a female student si  among the 12 receivers of a non-degree Darmasiswa Scholarship programme , an embassy official says.
Education and cultural attaché, Dr  Sedercor Melatunan from the Embassy of Indonesia said the Indonesian Government, with its ministries of education and culture and foreign affairs, is ready to fund 12 Darmasiswa recipients from Papua New Guinea.
Melatunan said of the 12 Papua New Guineans, only one female was qualified for the programme.
He did not provide other details.
“I hope that for next academic year, 2016-17, more female participants from PNG will apply for the scholarship,” Melatunan said.
“We are considering this to ensure equality in participation to allow same respect for gender equity.”
The 2015-16 non-degree programme will see the students joining other 388 Darmasiswa recipients from over 40 countries.
Melatunan said the students would study in several state universities for a year in the disciplines of Indonesian language, social sciences, information technology and computer sciences.
“The 12 Papua New Guineans will be hosted by eight universities in Indonesia,” he said.
“Their travelling documents are being processed at the Indonesia embassy office. All the Darmasiswa recipients are expected to be in Jakarta, the capital, no later than Aug 28.”
Melatunan said apart from Darmasiswa scholarship, the Indonesian Government provided other scholarships for bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes which might run for two-four years.
