What is the Motive Driving Grand Chief Somare's Children?
Mao Zeming, the Deputy Party Leader of the National People's Congress Party and Minister for Fisheries and Marine Resources, has dismissed the latest attempt by the children of Sir Michael Somare to manipulate media and politics in Papua New Guinea through a media stunt by Arthur Somare in Australia.
Minister Zeming said Arthur Somare is reported to be planning to stand in front of the ASC building in Australia as part of a stunt to generate media attention.
"While the cameras roll, I wonder how eager he will be to discuss his own ministerial record and the charges that were leveled against him in his political career.
"We have a sad situation where three of the Somare children are pushing the Grand Chief to play politics when people close to him, who do not have a personal agenda, know he is ready to enjoy life.
"The Somare children have to understand that the Prime Ministership of Papua New Guinea is not a birthright.
"Current attempts by the Somare children to create a dynasty of birthright will only fail.
"The Somare's are not the Kim family and this is not North Korea."
Minister Zeming expressed concern at the way in which the younger generation of Somare's have sought to twist events for their own enrichment over several years.
"We saw back in 2011 when the Grand Chief was ill in Singapore, and had decided to bow out of politics gracefully, the power-hungry children of his family forced him to try to cling on to power.
"I urge the Somare children to leave the Grand Chief to appreciate his achievements as the Father of the Nation for what he did in the 1960's and 1970's to bring about independence.
"I suggest to the Somare children to take your chances and seek election in your own right if you have something to offer. Do not play cheap policies from outside the Parliament.
"You can serve your Father's independence legacy if you are elected by the people."
