India’s High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea makes Courtesy Call on Prime Minister Peter O'Neill
High Commissioner Saxena has begun his posting to Papua New Guinea at a time of growing relations between the two countries.
“Relations between Papua New Guinea are at their strongest in the history of our engagement,” PM O’Neill said.
“I was very pleased to visit India and meet with Prime Minister Modi in August this year for the 2nd Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation.
“The increased participation of India with Pacific nations is very much appreciated and will continue to expand.
“There is great demand for energy in India and we hope the country will become a customer of the new LNG project being developed with TOTAL.
“Papua New Guinea further continues to support India for proposed reform of the United Nations Security Council that would include India as a permanent member.”
The Prime Minister said the number of visits between leaders and officials from India and Papua New Guinea is also increasing.
“The President of India, His Excellency, Shri Pranab Mukherjee, is invited to have a State Visit to Papua New Guinea in the near future.
“This will be followed by the visit by His Excellency, Prime Minister Modi, for the 3rd Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation next year.”
Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill thanked High Commissioner Saxena for the progress of all the initiatives and projects with the Indian Government, and further stated that the Papua New Guinea Government would consider all the options regarding the Line of Credit arrangements.
Bilateral relations with India were established when Papua New Guinea gained independence in 1975 and a resident mission was opened in Port Moresby in 1996.
