Polye tells Prime Minister O'Neill not to overlook Censorship Board
Prime Minister Peter O’Neill with his Community Development Minister Delilah Gore has come under the Opposition’s scrutiny again.
This time the Opposition Leader Don Pomb Polye has lashed out at them for overlooking the vital role which the Office of the Censorship Board plays in filtering illicit materials entering the country’s shores.
Mr Polye said he understood the office had missed out on its budgetary appropriation of K4 million last year.
He described the cut as ‘a work of someone with an intention to destroy the country’s moral standard.’
Polye added the rape cases, criminal acts, and indecent sexual acts among others were one way or the other a result of poor censorship in the country.
“This office plays an important role in making sure our people are free from illicit standards and materials which are harmful to the customary and religious fabrics of our society."
“Its work must be fully supported with adequate funding and staff so that the office should be represented at the provincial or even at the ward levels in light of cyber advancement,” he said.
Polye said pornography, sex enhancement products, and other illicit materials should be filtered thoroughly to help build a country with high standard of morality.
“When we are in government, we will fully fund this office with enough staff to restore the country’s standard of decency. We believe in the work which the censorship does to promote a decent society,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mr Polye, a parent himself, has called on his fellow parents to refrain their children from using sophisticated mobile phones or to guide them to do online researches to avoid them accessing illicit sites in the absence of cyber crime laws in the country.
