PNG Electoral Commission welcomes courts decision

The PNG  Electoral Commissioner this week is expected to propose new dates for the country's Local Level Government election to the Minister for Inter-Government relations for his approval.

Electoral Commissioner, Patilias Gamato indicated this when welcoming the Supreme court decision last Friday to set aside court orders preventing the Commission to conduct the election.

Gamato said this now allows for the the local level government elections to proceed without further delay.

The Supreme Court bench which comprises three judges unanimously ruled in favoured of the PNG Electoral Commission and its application to have the Supreme Court orders of the 25th of April 2019 to be set aside.

He said once the minister approves the new dates, the electoral commission will go ahead and accept nominations since the writs have already been issues.

The Electoral Commissioner said, all the 20 provincial electoral officers are on stand by to conduct the elections.
