Acting Police Commissioner Tokura condemns barbaric killings in Tari, Hela Province
PNG acting Police Commissioner Francis Tokura today condemned the killing of 18 people over the weekend in Tari, Hela Province.
He described the killing of 18 people included 16 women and children and two unborn babies as barbaric and inhuman.
“This is a tragedy. It is an unbelievable, unthinkable and atrocious criminal act that must be dealt with swiftly and severely. We will use all available resources to bring the killers to justice,” Acting Commissioner Tokura promised.
Acting Commissioner Tokura said the Hela Provincial Police Commander Chief Inspector Teddy Augwi has directed a 30-men team comprising 10 soldiers from the PNG Defence Force and 20 members of the Tari-based Mobile Squad and local police into the area to stop any further violence and capture the killers.
Mr Toruka said he is expecting an urgent security assessment of the Tari-Pori District from the Highlands West Divisional Commander Assistant Commissioner Kaiglo Ambane and PPC Augwi to determine the next course of action to take.
“We need to know if this situation can be handled by the local police or if they will require additional manpower, which in this case will require additional resources. Once we have the assessment then we can decide on a long term approach to address the issue in Hela,” Acting Commissioner Tokura said.
