Air Niugini welcomes Investigation into High Cost of Airfares

Papua New Guinea's flag carrier  and airline Air Niugini’s Managing Director Allan Milne has welcomed the investigation and review to be carried out by the Independent Consumer and Competition Commission (ICCC) on high cost of airfares in the aviation industry.

Mr Milne says aviation is a very difficult market with its pricing structure, and this investigation will help people better understand why the airfares are at where they are.

He says Air Niugini has nothing to hide and they are looking forward to the conversations they will be having in the course of the review.

Early this month, Treasury vice Minister Win Daki announced the investigation by ICCC into the aviation industry, after numerous complaints by the general public through the media and on social media about the high cost of airfares.

The Vice Minister said the investigation will look into the ever – increasing airfares, and the reasons why they continue to increase.

ICCC Commissioner Paulus Ain appealed to relevant authorities in the aviation sector to work with ICCC to establish the cause of the assumed increase in airfares.

The investigation report is expected to be given to Treasury by the end of October 2019.
