PNG PM Marape acknowledges the wishes of Bougainvilleans
The Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea James Marape has acknowledged the clear wishes of the people of Bougainville as per the referendum result announced by the Chairman of the Bougainville Referendum Commission on Wednesday.
Speaking in Arawa this afternoon, Prime Minister said that the issue was created by our colonial masters when they ruled a line between Solomon islands and Bougainville in the 18 century creating this problem that led to the Bougainville conflict.
He said this must be addressed by the two governments, ABG and the PNG government through the consultations that will take place in the future.
The Prime Minister said meantime, more funds will be allocated to Bougainville in the 2020 budget to make sure service delivery continues whilst consultations are taking place.
The Prime Minister also announced funds allocated for upgrading and sealing of the Buka ring road, the Aropa to Toimanapu road, the Kokopau to Arawa road and funds for a technical school and the Arawa School of Nursing.
