PNG Forestry Industries Association to close Industry

Papua New Guinea’s Forest Industries Association comprising major logging companies operating in the country have threatened to close the PNG Forest Industry this month.

The threat stems from the national government’s decision to increase tax regimes on log exports levy from 35 percent to 59 percent.

The PNG-F-I-A is also concerned that while the government approves an increase in this area, the distribution for landowners’ royalties and levies remains at 13 percent, and National Forest Services including CEPA remain at 4 percent.

The threat has attracted the attention of the Forest Minister, Solan Mirisim.

Mirism told media, the government has approved the policy, so what he can do now as the minister responsible will be to seek a review of it after six months.
