Port Moresby City authority reinforces Betel Nut ban

Port Moresby City Authority or NCDC will start enforcing the law against selling, buying, chewing and spitting of betel nut at public places including bus stops, traffic lights, road junctions and on public and private motor vehicles using public roads in the city.

NCDC in a notice to the public states, some parts of the city will see the immediate start of the enforcement while other areas will see awareness being carried out before the full enforcement as of Monday 22nd, June 2020.

In Boroko, the enforcement came into effect this morning with the foot patrolling of NCD Police and officers from NCDC Urban Safety unit.

The NCDC states during the State of Emergency lockdown, the city gained its former glory with the streets looking cleaner, however, when the parts of the SoE restrictions were lifted, the ugly head of uncleanliness resurfaced with large quantities of betel nut being sold.
The amended Summary Offences Act 2018 prohibits the selling, buying, chewing and spitting of betel nut at public places in the city.

Under the amendment, offenders are fined an amount not exceeding K10,000 and or a jail term not exceeding three years.
