PNG Health Worker dies of COVID-19 : Marape

Papua New Guinea  Prime Minister has announced the  first death due to  Covid-19 in the country this afternoon.

Prime Minister James Marape told a press conference at the Morauta House the deceased was a 35 year old male health worker who was admitted at the Covid-19 ward at the Port Moresby General Hospital.

According to the PM, an official medical report on the 35 year old is yet to be written and submitted to the government.

A  medical report  related to this death is yet to be made known. 

Following this announcement, the PM also announced that Port Moresby City is effectively going into lockdown for the next 14 days.

Schools and public transport will also close for 14 days.

The PM also said that in the coming days, non-essential businesses will be asked to shut down.

The private sector has been asked to transport its own employees to work.

Essential public servant workers will be told to work while non – essential public servants will be redeployed to the field to assist police military and health workers in zoning up the city.

PM Marape is appealing to residents in the City to continue practicing social distancing and to wash their hands regularly and to wear a face mask when going into public places, shops and markets.

So far, Papua New Guinea has 62 cases of coronavirus.
