PNG Electoral Commissioner Gamato re-arrested on Administrative Matter
PNG Electoral Commissioner Patilias Gamato has explained that his re-arrest this week, is not connected to his substantive matter that is currently before the Waigani Committal Court.
Mr. Gamato in a statement said that it is to do with an administrative matter, and he has instructed his lawyers to file a no-case submission against it.
He said that he was charged with two counts of interfering with a State witness, in Alwynn Jimmy, who has a staff of the Electoral Commission and is the complainant in the substantive matter.Mr. Gamato said that he as the CEO of the PNGEC, is required to inform staff of their retirement a year before their retrenchment, and this is what he did when he wrote to Mr. Jimmy.
Mr. Gamato was released on K1000 bail after being charged and will be attending his substantive matter at the Waigani Committal Court on August 26, 2020, because the Police Prosecution team was not ready.
