US Government Gives US$ 57 million to Fund Electrification in PNG

The United States Government will invest US$57million to fund electrification in PNG through the USA Agency for International Development.

United States Ambassador to PNG, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu Erin McKee, said electricity lifts the living standards of communities, cities, towns and remote villages. It allows schools and hospitals to deliver essential services and it is also an essential predecessor for the growth of the private sector including SME’s.

Ambassador McKee who was honored to announce the US$57million investment by the US Government, said this effort will be implemented by Research Triangle Institute (RTI) International, an independent non-profit research institute dedicated to improving the human condition around the world.

She adds that progress towards PNG’s ambitious objectives requires large scale investment by both the public and the private sector.

This includes investment in connecting households, service providers and businesses to the grid to communities that remain isolated.

The US government in partnership with the PNG government will ensure that a target of 200,000 new household electricity connections are made through strengthening PPL’s operations and increase its revenue.

Also to develop off grid electrification marvels to scale up electricity access in remote communities.

Minister for Energy William Onglo, thanked the government and the people of USA for their lasting and continued support through this huge investment in the country.
