Scott Waide : Investigative Journalism Lacks in PNG

Papua New Guinea enjoys media freedom in its entirety, however investigative Journalism is lacking.

PNG's leading Television Journalist Scott Waide made this statement during the Inaugural Media Freedom Day Breakfast panel discussion in Port Moresby this morning.

Scott Waide was responding to a question during the panel discussion about whether PNG Journalists have done enough in the area of investigative reporting.

Mr Waide who has 24 years of experience in the mainstream media gave his views stating that there is a lot that needs to be done in the area of investigative journalism and he pointed out that lack of training is one area.

He hopes to see future, universities and training institutions tailor their training materials to train young and aspiring journalists to equip themselves with the right skills and knowledge.

Waide used the occasion to encourage young Journalists to be passionate about investigative reporting as that is where the need is and lift the standard of investigative journalism in the country.

On the other hand, the country's top Journalists also pointed out that it's not applicable for PNG Journalists to apply the Western model of Journalism to cover and investigate things that are happening in PNG.

Scott, however, says it's always good to challenge corruption and report it from the ground level up highlighting the lack of basic services such as health centres or deteriorating classrooms in rural communities, and that's when people turn to see and feel the impact of corruption.

Meantime the globe is celebrating the world media freedom day today, the 3rd of May, 2022.

On this special day, the media fraternity around the globe not only celebrates World Media Freedom Day but commemorates the Journalists who perished in the line of their duties.

The media personnel also took time to reflect on the vital role media plays in any vibrant democratic country including PNG.
