Former PNG Politician and Businessman Sir Peter Charles Barter dies

Madang Province and Papua New Guinea has lost another senior statesman.

Businessman, former governor and government minister, Sir Peter Charles Barter passed on early this morning in Cairns, Australia, after being sick for some time.

The management of his Madang Resort Hotel confirmed Sir Peter’s passing hours ago, stating that further details will be announced later.

The staff and management of the Melanesian Tourist Services, and his Madang Resort Hotel are in disbelief and in tears at the passing of Sir Peter, whom they all looked up to as a father figure, apart from being their boss.

They described Sir Peter, an icon for both Madang and Papua New Guinea, and that they will greatly miss him.

In an emailed statement his son, Andrew announced  his fathers passing.

He said Sir Peter developed a rare terminal heart condition that could not be treated and was out of the country seeking treatment until his passing.

Sir Peter is survived by his wife Lady Janet Barter, son Andrew and grandchildren Jordan and Amaiya.

The family said they were overwhelmed and grateful for the condolences messages received near and far.

Sir Peter first came to Papua New Guinea as a pilot in 1967 with the Divine Word Aviation.

Meanwhile, the Madang Chamber of Commerce has expressed their sincere condolences to the family, the staff of the Melanesian Tourist Services and friends of Sir Peter on his passing also.

President of the Madang Chamber of Commerce, Kevin Murray said, Sir Peter Barter was a staunch supporter of the Chamber and will be greatly missed by all.
