Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Affirms Malaysia's Vital Role in Bilateral Ties

Papua New Guinea Prime Minister and Treasurer  James Marape highlighted the significance of Malaysia as a "very important" bilateral partner for Papua New Guinea (PNG) during a welcoming event for the new Malaysian High Commissioner, H.E. Hamizan Hashim, on Tuesday, January 23, 2024.


Prime Minister Marape underscored the crucial role played by Malaysian companies in PNG, emphasizing that Malaysia is a cornerstone partner for Papua New Guinea. He elaborated on the substantial impact, revealing that more than 800 Malaysian companies are currently registered in Papua New Guinea, collectively contributing to the creation of over 30,000 jobs.

"At the business level, we are working with investors to expand agriculture, downstream forestry, fisheries, and other areas of the economy," affirmed Prime Minister Marape during the welcoming ceremony.

Expressing anticipation for productive collaboration, the Prime Minister welcomed the new Malaysian High Commissioner and expressed his desire to enhance the relationship between the two nations, fostering increased people-to-people, business-to-business, and government-to-government interactions.

Prime Minister Marape lauded Malaysia's economic growth, describing its transformation from a developing nation into an economic powerhouse as an "inspiration" for Papua New Guinea.

The Prime Minister reminisced about a recent meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Hon. Anwar Ibrahim at APEC 2023 in San Francisco, where both leaders extended invitations for reciprocal visits. Announcing plans for a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim later this year, Prime Minister Marape emphasized the importance of fortifying ties between the two nations, with the exact date for the meeting to be determined in the coming months.
