PNG Prime Minister Marape Pays Tribute to Late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare in Wewak

Prime Minister James Marape visited Wewak yesterday to honor Papua New Guinea’s Founding Father and first Prime Minister, the Late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare.

February 26, 2025, marked the fourth anniversary of Sir Michael’s passing.

In his message to the people of Papua New Guinea, Prime Minister Marape described the Grand Chief as a symbol of forgiveness, peace, and tolerance. He urged Papua New Guineans, particularly the younger generation, to uphold the values and legacy left behind by the nation's founding leader.

Marape also expressed gratitude to the people of East Sepik for their unwavering support of Sir Michael throughout his nearly 50-year political career.

Speaking on behalf of the Somare family, Sir Michael’s son, Arthur Somare, invited the Prime Minister to lay a wreath at Villa Viak. He thanked Marape for taking time from his busy schedule to visit Wewak and pay his respects to their late father.

Arthur Somare also noted that Sir Michael’s final resting place remains open to all who wish to visit.

Meanwhile, the National Government is working closely with the Somare Foundation and other stakeholders to refurbish Villa Viak, with plans to establish a Somare Library and Museum in memory of the Late Founding Father.
