UN Urges Justice and Reforms in Papua New Guinea After Murder Sparks Violence and Rights Violations

Following a horrifying murder in Port Moresby, the United Nations in Papua New Guinea has called for justice and stronger human rights protections amid rising reports of gender-based violence and forced evictions. The UN has voiced alarm over claims that police allegedly torched homes in the Baruni informal settlement, reportedly as retribution for the abduction, rape, and killing of a woman near the area. These events have prompted widespread outrage, with demands for accountability and safeguards to protect marginalized groups.

UN Resident Coordinator Mr. Peterson Magoola firmly denounced all forms of sexual and gender-based violence, urging authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice. He highlighted that collective punishment, forced evictions, and property destruction blatantly violate basic human rights. Such actions, he warned, unfairly impact society’s most vulnerable members, including women, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities.

“The authorities must ensure that all law enforcement operations align with human rights principles, due process, and the rule of law,” Magoola emphasized. He also stressed that retaliatory measures and collective punishments are unacceptable in any legitimate policing strategy. “These incidents require an immediate and thorough investigation,” he added. “We remain committed to partnering with the Government of Papua New Guinea to promote justice, uphold human rights, and ensure the safety of every individual.”

The UN’s intervention highlights the pressing need for systemic changes to tackle both gender-based violence and the misuse of power, ensuring that justice is achieved while upholding the rights of all citizens in Papua New Guinea.
