PNG BAGS GOLD AT TAEKWONDO NEW ZEALAND NATIONALS

The Papua New Guinea contingent to the 2014 Taekwondo New Zealand (TNZ) Nationals have raised the flag, yet again, for the country by winning two gold medals and one silver, in day one of the championships.
PNG’s Rainner Pennie won gold in the 63 – 68 kilograms division, outclassing his New Zealand opponent to claim the ultimate recognition at the international tournament.

The East New Britain taekwondoin impressed his New Zealand counterparts, exemplary of the level of professionalism and skills of team PNG to the TNZ. He was all smiles when receiving his medal earlier today and has carved his name into the history of the prestigious tournament.

Also performing exceptionally well was female taekwondoin, Samantha Kassman who won gold in the +68 kilograms division and coming second, to claim silver in the -67 kilograms division.

Taekwondo PNG announced their winnings today with much jubilation from Taekwondo enthusiasts in the country.

The seven member team left our shores on Thursday 2 October for the TNZ staged at the Avondale College Stadium in Auckland.

The Taekwondo New Zealand National Championships is governed by the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) rules and standards, with WTF certified Referees, Corner Judges, Technical Assistants and officials.

Taekwondo is a martial art originating from the days of tribal communities on the Korean Peninsula. It was developed amongst the tribes as a means of preserving their own lives and building both physical and mental strength.

Taekwondo is defined as such; "Tae" means "foot" or "to strike with the feet". "Kwon" means "hand", or "to strike with the hand". "Do" means discipline, art, or way. Hence TaeKwonDo (foot-hand-way) means literally "the art of the feet and the hands" or "the art of kicking and punching".

Taekwondo is oriented more toward punching, blocking and kicking actions. There are, however, self defence techniques in Taekwondo as well and the two are often combined as they complement one another.
