PNG Police Commisioner Toami Kulunga faces imprisonment with hard labour
A penalty of six-months imprisonment with hard labour has been submitted for convicted Police Commissioner, Toami Kulunga.
Lawyer representing Geoffrey Vaki, Sam Bonai, made the submission this morning, at the Waigani National Court.
Mr. Bonai said, the court must protect its integrity and send a signal to the general public, to obey court orders.
The lawyer said,Kulunga is holding a substantial position and he's no ordinary man.
He further told the court, his argument and defense was shallow.
Lawyer representing Kulunga said there are different degrees of contempt and this one does not fall in the worse category therefore, does not amount to imprisonment but a fine of 2 thousand kina.
A decision will be handed down on June 13th.
Kulunga was found guilty of contempt two weeks ago for failing to follow a national court order to reinstate the suspended Deputy Commissioner Jeffrey Vaki among other orders in 2012.
