Chinese medical ship to visit Port Moresby
A CHINESE medical ship carrying over 100 medical doctors and nurses will arrive in Port Moresby tomorrow to treat members of the public over the next six days.
Navy hospital ship Ark Peace is on a goodwill visit to carry out humanitarian medical services. The aim is to strengthen bilateral medical co-operation and friendship between China and PNG.
The hospital aboard the vessel is equipped with 300 medical beds, eight operation rooms, more than 200 types of medical equipment and is staffed with more than 100 doctors and nurses.
Medical staff on board will provide medical services in 22 specialised medical fields of common diseases and carry out short term surgeries. They will also conduct consultations and surgeries in co-operation with PNG health staff, as well as exchanging skills and advice with medical personnel from PNG Defence Force.
The ship, since its commissioning in 2008, has made goodwill visits to 21 countries. It has navigated 60,000 nautical miles, provided medical services for more than 60,000 patients and catered for 570 surgeries and operations. It is manned by a 300-plus crew.
This trip is the fourth leg of its Pacific journey having already visited Tonga, Fiji and Vanuatu. Ark Peace will berth at the PNG naval base and open from 8am to 11:30am and from 12:30pm to 4pm. The general public is encouraged to come along for treatment during the given times from September 12 to 17.
