 Papua New Guinea  Prime Minister Peter O’Neill has challenged men in the country to respect women and embrace them as their equal.
O’Neill, who is in Australia, said in his International Women’s Day message that men must treat women with respect and speak out against violence.
“We are a nation of tradition and pride. But sadly some men do not embrace women and give them equal opportunities, or do not accord the respect that they deserve,” he said.
O’Neill said too often around the world, violence against women was tolerated.
“Sadly this is the case for some in the country,” he said.
“A man of strength is one who never resorts to violence against women and can hold his temper and does not raise his hand in anger.
“If you respect the rights and safety of women in our community, you are a nation-builder and you are contributing to the development of our country. We must celebrate the contributions that women have made in the country and are now seen as much the future leaders as men.”
