Food Safety Audit to be convened in to RD Tuna Cannery
Papua New Guinea authorities will conduct food safety into RD Tuna after alleged unsafe procedures of processing food used by the company went viral on social media. A social media post alleged that RD Tuna's brand, Dolly Tuna tinned food as not good for human consumption because of the way it is being manufactured at the RD Tuna Cannery in Madang.
According to a food safety officer at the National Department of Health Mr Terry Daniel, the food sanitation council will discuss this issue and hopefully conduct a 3rd party food safety audit together with NISIT, NFA and FSC as the allegations are very serious.
NFA has been given the competent authority status for fish and fisheries products in 2010 by the health department but the mandate on food safety is still vested with NDOH meaning that any food audits conducted at canning factories should be conducted with FSC but this has not been the case.
Mr Daniels say at this time there has been no reports to the FSC about food safety conducted at canning factories so it’s an eye opener now for all parties concerned to do their job for the betterment of the people of Papua New Guinea.
