New Nursing College in Wewak is preparing the Nation for the Future
Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, has opened the Divine Word University Nursing College in Wewak, East Sepik.
Speaking at the opening, the Prime Minister said Papua New Guinea has no choice but to not only keep up with healthcare requirements, and must plan for future population growth.
“Our population is growing at a rate that will reach 300,000 births each year before too long,” the Prime Minister said.
“This is unsustainable and existing services will not be able to cope.
“While we are developing programs to slow down population increase, the reality is that the number of people in the county will continue to increase and this means we require more healthcare professionals.
“It is the same story for many countries where populations are going up and more doctors and nurses are required.
“The first cohort of 60 nurses is now starting their training and I wish each and every one of you my best wishes for your careers ahead and the lives you will save.
“The opening of this School of Nursing is another game changer for East Sepik and for the country as we prepare or people for a better future.”
