PNG Politics : Sam Basil's Labour party endorses Tonde for by-election

THE United Labour Party (ULP) has endorsed Joseph Tonde for the Moresby North-West by-election.

Party leader Sam Basil said on Thursday that Tonde was a man that would fight for the rights of the Motu Koitabu people and the people in the settlements.

The 52-year-old Engan finished third in the race for the North-West seat during the 2017 national elections.


Tonde is a longtime resident and a community leader in electorate.

Basil commended the work Tonde had done in providing medical services to churches and communities in the electorate.

“Basil see him as a strong candidate,” Basil said. “He walked around with in him in the last few days and saw that he is a practical man just like me, because before I became a politician, I was involved with the communities in Bulolo, Morobe.”

Basil said the party was confident that Tonde had the experience as a leader and track record of community work that would see him “deliver for the people”.

“We are pleased to back him up.

“We will also work closely with other parties candidates in the coalition Government and we will support each other in making sure that we share our preferential votes.”

Meanwhile, Tonde said he was a missionary and had worked in communities throughout the country as well as the electorate.
