PNG PM Marape heads to US for APEC 2023

 PM MARAPE SEES AELW AS OPPORTUNITY FOR PNG TO ADVANCE DISCUSSIONS ON GLOBAL AND ECONOMIC ISSUES OF INTEREST

Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape is expected to arrive in San Francisco, United States for the 2023  APEC Economic Leaders Week meetings  tomorrow( Tuesday 14 November US Time)  while Chief Secretary to Government Ambassador Ivan Pomaleu arrives today (Monday 13 Nov US time) .


The Prime Minister, in a media conference on Monday ( PNG Time) said  as a member of APEC, Papua New Guinea  has the opportunity  to meet with Leaders from 20 other APEC member economies to discuss regional and global economic issues of interest.

He stated that this year is particularly important as Leaders meet under the Policy Theme of “Creating Resilient and Sustainable future for all” which is fitting at a time when new and emerging trends such as Climate change, Post COVID, the advent of digital era is NOT only posing huge challenges and opportunities for APEC economies but changing the global architecture of trade.

It is understood these discussions at the AELW in San Francisco is important for our economy in our pursuit to maximise trade and investment opportunities through the government’s vision to establish special economic zones and downstream processing and diversify our economic base to include agriculture and fisheries.

Heads of the 21 economies have already arrived in San Francisco for the meetings which will run from the 11-17 November 2023 at the Moscone Centre.

APEC is the largest convening of world leaders in San Francisco since the UN Charter was signed in 1945 during the UN Conference on International Organization, also called the San Francisco Conference.     

The United States is chairing the 2023 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Leaders’ Meeting in iconic San Francisco, California. 

The United States is using this premier platform to advance economic policies in the Asia-Pacific region to promote free, fair, and open trade and investment and advance inclusive and sustainable growth.

The 21 APEC Member Economies account for nearly 40 percent of the global population and nearly 50 percent of global trade.     

APEC’s themes this year are sustainability, inclusivity, innovation and resilience.
