Procurement of Cobaltfor Angau Hospital raises eyebrows
The Special Parliamentary Committee for Public Sector and Service Delivery today at the parliament had a panel hearing for the procurement of cobalt for the radiotherapy cancer facility in Lae ANGAU hospital.
The committee chaired by the MP of Goroka Hon. Bire Kimisopa comprised of the Hon Gov. of Northern Province Garry Juffa, MP for Obura Wonenara Hon. Mera Minne-Kipefa and its Legal Officer Roger McGuire.
There to answer to the panel regarding the topic of cobalt procurement for Lae ANGAU Hospital was the Cobalt procurement Coordinator George Otto from the National Department of Health who was appointed to this job post since 2012.
Hon. Kimisopa enquired about the status of the cobalt procurement so far since 2012 as the cancer facility in Lae depended on the availability of cobalt and in the last 2 to 3 years the facility had to run on cobalt acquired some number of years ago and is not up to the standard of a cancer facility according to the research and investigation of the Special Parliament Committee.
Mr Otto replied that funding was not a problem but putting together a law to regulate the use, compliance and monitoring of safety standard with the use of Cobalt in the country was the issue at the moment.
He said his office has being working towards getting a legislative and regulatory system in place however there has not been good communication so far with the departments involved.
Gov. Garry Juffa commented that taking 4 years to legislate a law that could save the cancer dying population of Papua New Guinea is absurd and unacceptable as this concern the lives of people and immediate action needs to be taken to address this issue. PNG FM
