PNG Investigates Fake VISA Syndicate
Papua New Guinea Minister for Immigrations and Border Security Wesley Nukunds on Friday announced an internal investigation into the PNG Immigration and Citizenship Authority (PNGICA) over allegations of involvement of several of its officers in a fake visa syndicate.
Recently the Police Fraud Squad arrested an Australian woman for being in possession of a fake PNG visa and evidence revealed that PNGICA visa labels and wet stamps were used, meaning there officers from PNGICA involved in this syndicate.
Based on this case, Director of the National Fraud and Anti-Corruption Directorate Chief Superintendent Mathew Damaru asked the Immigrations Minister to initiate an internal investigation into PNGICA to identify the officers involved, especially in processing and issuance of visas and passports.
This investigation will run concurrently with the criminal investigation currently underway by police detectives from the National Fraud and Anti-Corruption Directorate.
Minister Nukunds on Friday formally announced the Terms of Reference for this internal investigation, which will be carried out by a team of six senior officers of PNGICA.
The investigation will cover cases of visa fraud, other immigration related fraud, abuse of office, corruption and conspiracy committed by immigration officers.
The investigation will be carried out for a month, with the interim report expected to be submitted on the 22nd of May whilst the final report must be submitted on the 29th of May, 2020.
The Minister says officers found involved in this syndicate will be terminated immediately and will also be dealt with by the law for putting the country’s national security at high risk.
