New Ireland Provincial Capital Kavieng to have International Airport
New Ireland is looking forward to a number of ground-breaking events in the coming weeks with the international gateway scheduled for next week Wednesday the 15th of July.
Prime Minister James Marape accompanied by senior Cabinet Ministers including the Minister for Civil Aviation Minister, Capt. Lekwa Gure MP, will join Governor Sir Julius Chan with support of the Kavieng airport landowners to officiate the ground breaking of the new Kavieng International Airport.
The multi-million kina airport project is one of 27 impact projects promised by the State in 1995 under the Lihir MOA that will add significant value and match the already newly constructed four-lane Kavavu Avenue from the airport to the waterfront built by the Government of New Ireland.
In recognition of the strong leadership under the Governor and interventions to resolve the longstanding land issues and outstanding payments, the airport landowner groups have come together to support the Government of Sir J and work with the State to secure progress of the new Kavieng International Airport project and participate in the groundbreaking.
“I met with the Civil Aviation Minister Capt. Gure last Saturday to kick start ground preparations as well as to ensure upfront payment to the landowners prior to start of construction. This must also be topped up with an added compensation for the delay in payments,” said Sir J.
The Governor also confirmed meeting with the Prime Minister on Monday to further define New Ireland’s requirements on the building of the International Airport.
He made it clear on numerous occasions that the people of New Ireland deserve to have a say on the design of the façade of International Airport terminal and has put forward a state of the Art design depicting New Irelands symbolic bird “Drongo.”
“We want our people to also benefit from the spin offs of this project. Even the staging of the ground breaking ceremony we are ensuring the landowners are part and partial of the preparations. The road we have travelled has not been easy but we are getting there,” said Sir J.
The New Ireland Government is also adamant that Newcrest must build a ring road around Lihir and is calling on senior management to effect its word as promised early in this year on Lihir and later emphasized by CEO Craig Jones during a follow-up meeting with the Provincial Executive Council.
Sir J is currently in Port Moresby attending to national issues, including the education conference where he is accompanied by chairlady of the Provincial Education Board, Dr Kappa Malpo and the Director for Education, Mr. Apelis Benson. Their focus is to fast forward action on the building of the Namatanai Technical College and the New Ireland University.
The Governor has also met with the PNG Rugby League Administrator, Sandis Tsaka, to seek technical advice in line with his government’s policy to develop Sports, Youth and Women under a coordinated blueprint.
He extended invitation to Mr. Tsaka for the groundbreaking of the Kavieng Sports Stadium on the 27th of this month which will coincide with New Ireland Day and the announcement of a new Chairman for Youth and Sports and Women.
