PNG FPDA Opens New Agriculture Infrastructure Funded by Australian Government

The Fresh Produce Development Agency (FPDA) has announced the opening of its state-of-the-art integrated training and development facility in Kainantu, Eastern Highlands Province, on Friday, December 13, 2024. According to FPDA, the infrastructure includes a Tissue Culture Laboratory and Training Centre, funded under the PNG-Australia partnership program through the Incentive Fund.

The Tissue Culture Laboratory is designed to produce high-quality and disease-free potato plantlets to address the growing demand for potato seeds. FPDA noted that the facility is expected to improve agricultural productivity and support the growth of the potato industry. In the future, the laboratory will also cater to the propagation of clean planting materials for other crops.

FPDA further stated that the new Training Centre is the first of its kind for the agency and will be used to build the capacity of farmers, value chain players, and other stakeholders in the agriculture sector. The facility is intended to strengthen knowledge and skills to enhance the productivity and sustainability of the horticulture industry.

Describing the project as a milestone, FPDA highlighted the collaboration with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and the Incentive Fund in delivering the facility. The investment, valued at K17 million, aligns with the PNG government’s priorities on agriculture, contributing to food security and income generation for rural communities.

FPDA acknowledged that the funding reflects the agency’s commitment to good governance and effective management practices. They expressed gratitude to the Australian government for their generous support, which they believe will significantly benefit farming communities in Papua New Guinea.

The agency has extended an invitation to stakeholders and partners to join the celebration in true Eastern Highlands tradition, emphasizing its gratitude and commitment to serving the agricultural sector.
